Microsoft’s Media Player- Zune

Microsoft’s mp3 player in the works is called “Zune” (the project name for it being Argo), and the product logo is pictured above. Zune is Microsoft’s alleged “iPod Killer”. We saw these leaked, yet very blurry, teaser pictures before.

Apparently, the Zune mp3 players will have wireless Wifi technology that allows Zune to Zune file sharing. Microsoft is pitching this product as “Connected Entertainment”, and to that end the Zune owners will be able to have a wireless, social network of friends. To attract current iPod users, Microsoft is even going to let new Zune users download for free any songs they had previously downloaded from the iTunes stores. Even though this will cost Microsoft (they’ll be paying for the downloads), Microsoft believes this will pay out in the end. [And it will, *if* Microsoft can convert enough iPod users to become faithful Zune users]. The Zune mp3 players will also be available in a myriad of colours, will have a larger screen than the video iPod’s (around 3 or 3.5 inches) and have a brushed metal back quite similar to Apple’s iPod. The Zune’s launch date is set for November. Here’s a non blurry, alleged picture of the Zune, by the way, and it does seem to match up with the previously released blurry pictures.

[…] According to Think Secret, Microsoft’s mp3 player in the works, Zune, may perhaps come with a powerful 400 MHz processor for gaming, and also may have a built in tuner that recieves satellite radio broadcasts. With Microsoft prepared to buy the songs you currenty have on iTunes, so that the format will be compatible with the Zune, the Urge music service, a hefty 400 MHz processor for heavy gaming, Wifi, and an optional Sirius or XM radio service, it looks like Apple may finally find itself a serious opponent. I have to admit I like the larger screen, but why is that picture so blury? I mean if they’re going to leak then they should leak in focus.

Microsoft sent me a brand new Rio Carbon 6 GB with headphones and I absolutely cannot get it to work, play, whatever! I’d rather just sell it. It also came with a funky black leather case that doesn’t even have a proper cutout for the screen to see through. Any ideas?

Dude, who do they have in charge of the industrial design? This thing is hideous looking. The proportions of the interface buttons, the crazy black thick stroke around the screen looks like an amateur designed it. What is the purposes of the black stroke? It just clutters up the face and is distracting. Microsoft will have to hire much better designers if it hopes to out shine the folks at Apple. Just another pathetic attempt by MS to imitate Apple.

I am so glad that Gates and Company are now not only copying the Mac OS with Vista, but they are going to enhance the iPod lineup with additional iPod like designs.
I have followed MS for many years and I have never seen a consumer product that really kicked butt but hey it’s going to be fun to have this small rematch.
Microsoft has always been “late to lunch” and has made billions on that policy. How many versions of Word have ther been since 1986 for the Mac-15 ?
Now that question is, will this be competition or simply another “imitation” iPod.
Apple has truly transformed digital music and to simply come along with more players won’t do much. Look at Dell’s dumb mp3 player or even Sony’s sad players. Napster folks has totally flopped!
What everyone gets is that the iPod is a statement of design. A devise that has no rival and may never have one. Its gotta be cool, its gotta be hip and its gotta work seamlessly and make a real statement. It can’t just simply say, made by Microsoft cause that will not work. They have zero cache! The iPod lineup is just too good and a part of world culture now as is iTunes!

Microsoft Zune is on the right track in eliminating the iPod altogether, but, they have to look more at the style, then the workings as it is targeted at a majority that only care about vanity, rather than technology.

The Zune player has taken a step up in technology, however the physical appearance must be fixed before it rivals apple

Just look at all of the improvements and innovations Ipod has came up with over the last 5 years. AND THAT WAS WITH VIRTUALY NO COMPETITION!! Now there may be another fighter in the ring! (a not-so worthy opponent, but an opponent still the same) I can’t wait to see what Ipod comes up with for it’s first sucker punch at microsoft. keep em coming Bill, apple is just going to make a bigger and better ipod for the rest of us as a result. chao!

I can’t wait for the new iPod! Zune looks like a defibrillator and will probably have plenty of bugs when and if it comes out on time, good luck micro soft.
