Litroenergy Promises Long Lasting Light!

Posted in Environmentally Friendly, Random Tech by Danielle on June 10th, 2008.

MPK has developed a light source that allegedly lasts for 12 years! This light source, AKA Litroenergy, acts somewhat like a glow stick, save for the fact that it never needs to be recharged, and is extremely crush resistant. “Our development/design of long-life, self-luminous micro particles called Litrospheres (non-toxic) emit light continuously for 12 plus years (half-life point) without any exposure to a light or other energy (not effected by cold or heat). This extremely low cost material offers 24/7 light, which can be injection molded or added to paint. It is 5,000lb crush resistant, stable and constant light source (gives off no U.V. rays). It is designed to give off almost any color of light desired. Our goal is to mass produce this material and supply OEM’s. Litroenergy has potential to save billions of dollars in energy costs world-wide” states MPV in their winning Create The Future contest entry.

Although MPK claims that Litroenergy is nontoxic, the main chemical in this light source is Tritium–an isotope of hydrogen banned by the US because of its radioactivity. Sadly, Litroenergy may not get off the ground in the US.  Here is the patent application for Litroenergy. Here is MPK’s webpage.

Conceptual Hotel Mimicks the Death Star

Posted in Architecture, Random Tech by Danielle on March 18th, 2008.

Although the Heerim Architectures who designed this hotel in Azerbaijan claim that they drew their inspiration for the hotel’s unique architecture from the Moon (and accordingly named the building “Full Moon Hotel”), the hotel’s resemblance to the Death Star is rather striking. So striking, in fact, that Azerbaijan may find itself flooded with glassy eyed Star Wars fans if this hotel were to be truly put in production. Even without this claim to fame, the Full Moon Hotel would surely be  flooded by tourists who want a gorgeous view of the Caspian Sea, which the Hotel conveniently overlooks.

Glo Pillow Gently Wakes Heavy Sleepers

Posted in Random Tech by Danielle on March 17th, 2008.

This pillow is for those of use who find traditional alarm clocks both utterly useless and annoying. Useless because we simply turn them off. Annoying because they leave us in a half-conscious, irritated state. The Glo Pillow gently wakes sleepers by slowly increasing the intensity of light in order to simulate a natural sun-rise. Designed by Ian Walton and Eoin McNally, the Glo Pillow uses an LED interface to wake users, beginning 40 minutes before the pre-set alarm time. Theoretically, this will gently wake the user, while keeping him in sync with his Circadian Rhythms. The Glo Pillow was named one of Time’s Best Inventions of the Year in 2007. Unfortunately, the Glo Pillow is just a prototype right now.
