Firefly Phones

Posted in Phones by Freybjörn on November 25th, 2005.

Firefly phones seem to be popular with both parents and children this Christmas.

The Firefly, aimed at children 8-12 years of age, boasts of many safety features. There are 2 hotkeys that call either parent (so called the “mom key” or “dad key”) at the press of the button, and parents can program phone numbers into the password protected phone book. Another useful safety feature is the emergency buttton, which dials 911 after being held down for 3 seconds. Parents also have the option to block all incoming phone calls that are not in the approved phonebook. Accessories, such as the neon coloured firefly shells, are also avaliable for purchase for $12.99.

The Firefly Phone has won the 2006 ‘Best of Innovations’ Award in the telephone category from the Consumer Electronics Association. Currently, Firefly phones are $49.99 through Cingular Wireless.

My kids love the FireFly phone, it’s also handy for my husband and I because our twin boys can call us when plans change (as they so often do). What a great idea!

My husband and I just purchased 2 Firefly phones for our twin boys for their upcoming 10th birthday. The safety features are awesome, and it is the perfect way for the kids to stay in touch with us. We did some investigation before our purchase, i.e. Consumer Reports, Good Housekeeping and other “good sources of unbiased info” and compared to the LG Migo phone, (who I fell is perfect for a 6 or 7 year old) the Firefly allows kids to accept incoming calls from 20 pre-programmed (by their parents and IS password protected) compared to the LG Migo which will only accept 4 pre-programmed incoming calls. 10 year-olds DO NOT need text messaging, email etc. My husband and I will closely monitor these phones, and their use. They are meant for specific times when the kids will be away from us, NOT for everyday use to chat with friends, not text messaging or internet needed.
I also really like where the emergency 911 button is located on the Firefly compared to the LG Migo. On the Migo, it is located right in the center of the buttons on the faceplate. On the Firefly, it is located on the side of the phone and has to be held down for a at least 3-5 seconds so it is far more unlikely they will push this button “by mistake.” The Firefly is definitely a great purchase for kids 9 – 12 years old. We love them, and so do our twin boys! I would NEVER purchase a child in this age group a regular cell phone with all the unneeded accessories, i.e. Internet and text messaging.
    Great product with outstanding features!

This phone is the dumest thing you could ever get. That phone is good enough for humping the breasts. Don’t you think. And making you feel so good and high when it happens.

Boy, I feel sorry for youif your parents tried to pass that hunk of junk off as a PRESENT! Any child over the age of nine deserves better. ‘MY children don’t need a fancy cellphones with those electronic doo-dads. They’ll call their friends, if they have any friends left after being seen with a Firefly”. If your child is under nine, this phone is perfect. But otherwise, you’ll ruin their personal life.
MIDDLE SCHOOL: Wandlisma: Hey Jay, you’re funny, whats your cell phone number?
Jay: Oh, it’s 555-555-3424. But I need to talk with my mommy so she can magically put it into my Firefly!
Wandalisma: Oh, that’s ok, I’ll call you!
Jay: Nah, it can’t accept any calls from anyone that isn’t on my Address book.
Wandalisma: Oh, why don’t you just call and ask if we could go to the movies then?
Jay: Ok, I’ll jsut press the Mommy button!
Mom: NO, the only girls you’ll ever need are me and your Aunt Johanna!
    Jay: Please??
Mom: No! You’re only fourteen!!! Now come back to mommy and help me finish the laundry!!!

This is the future kids will see if they find a Firefly in their stocking. It was overexaggerated, but this is what kids see. TRUST YOUR KIDS, YOU RAISED ‘EM!!!!

I just bought the Firefly for my daughter’s 9th birthday. It’s a great first phone, and I love the parental controls. I was able to figure out how to hook up voice mail to it too!!! You simply get your carrier’s message retrieval phone number (I did this my just looking at what number I was calling to retrieve my own messages off of my cell) and then program that phone number into your child’s address book. Then call it from the FireFly, and it will automatically take you to voice mail set up. Once in the call you can activate the number keys by clicking on the green phone button (to the left of the address book button) and you’ll see a row of numerals as well as a * and a # option. You do have to scroll back and forth, but it allows you to enter the tones needed to complete the voice mail set up (including recording your busy/away messages) and then be able to retrieve, delete, and save messages. Now the phone doesn’t have a way for you to be notified that you have a voicemail, but it does have a MISSED CALL feature and since the amount of calls they are getting are limited, it’s no big deal to just automatically call your voicemail if you get a missed call notification. My daughter got to record both an away message and a busy message, and has been retrieving her voice mails with no problem. I’m very happy with it.

I just ordered the firefly for my son who will be 8 tomorrow. I think it will be a great starter phone for him. If it doesn’t work out, we do have 30 days to make an exchange for a different phone. By the way, Jill, thanks for that tip on the voicemail. I hadn’t thought of that one. I already have made the list of numbers that I’m going to program in the phone.

All you stupid little children need to stop posting on the internet and lowering my IQ. Obviously since you don’t need all these “fancy doodads like text messaging and internet” you don’t need a computer, so go outside and play with a rubber ball or something and cry to your imaginary friends about what a mean person I am. Stupid kids.

Now, cute as this thing is, I personally think it should be for kids who are like…between 5 and 9 years old. By nine, they should be intellegent enough to use an actual cellphone. Although considering how stupid alot of parents are nowadays, I have my doubts. Instead of looking for “childsafe” products like this, parents need to instruct their kids better and not buy them cheap gimmicks to cover their lack of parenting skills. ********.

Buy the cheapest cellphone you can with very basic features [i.e. voicemail and phone book], teach your kids to dial 911 in cases of emergency, and tell them not to act stupid. Is it really that hard? Then again alot of parents have trouble not acting stupid themselves.

If your kid is between 5 and 9, this might be a cool gift for them. If they’re any older than that, try being a decent parent instead of giving them a baby toy.

I just ordered my chid the firefly for Christmas, she is nine. Yes, my chid is smart and very capiable of working a regular cell phone, God nows she helps me with mine some times. Her phone is a “tester phone” to see how responsible she is with it.(keeping up with it and not going over our min.) If she does good then she can have a new one. I feel like the children that are complaining, their parents were trying to do the same thing and if they read your ugly remarks and nasty word they would probally not only take your phone but your computer too.All of those ugly remarks only shows that your not mature enough for a regular phone!!
For the people who like it, please let me know where I can get assessories. I am lookig forward to giving it to her – I am sire she will like it!

I think the firefly is somewhat kiddy to be aimed at children 8 – 12. Sure its good children under 9 years old, but once they are over 9 years old they are going to be teased and what good will that do?

Also, where would a child under 9 years old be when they were alone? Sure there are those feral kids who run the neighbourhood, but I honestly didn’t think their parents cared about them enough to buy them a phone.

This phone is amazing! I bought the prepaid version of this phone for my best friend’s 22nd birthday as a second line to take out with her when she drinks. She’s always had a problem of calling and texting ex boyfriends and people she shouldn’t every time she gets inebriated. This phone is a blessing and has saved her from embarrassment and getting into trouble when she goes out. The pre-programmed phone book still allows her to call certain close friends, as well as the local cab company and emergency correspondents should she ever need them. Now she can have worry free fun and still be safe.

I saw my friend with this phone in elementary school… I mean, it’s probably better targeted at kids age 5-8 instead of 8-12. There are so many restrictions on it, and even Jeff Kinney made fun of it with the “Lady Bug” in his series “Diary of a Wimpy Kid”. Of course parents love this phone because they can exert iron-fist control over their kids like a dictator. If you are a parent and are thinking about getting this for your kid, please make sure your kid is younger than 9 years old.
