Toshiba Gigabeat S Reviewed: 8.3/10

Posted in Gigabeat S, Ipod, Mp3 Players by Danielle on June 5th, 2006.

CNET reviewed Toshiba’s Gigabeat S and gave it an amazing 8.3/10, the exact same score that the iPod Nano recieved, and a full 0.3 points ahead of both the 5g Video Ipod and Creative’s Zen Vision: M, which previously recieved many accolades from CNET as a possible iPod threat. The Gigabeat S also recieved CNET’s prestigious “Editor’s Choice” award.

CNET tested a White, 30 GB Toshiba Gigabeat S and found that it was comparable if not better than the iPod in many ways. Firstly, for size, the Gigabeat S is smaller than the Video Ipod in “every way” except for thickness.  It also weighs 5.3 ounces (compared to the iPod’s 5.7 ounces).  CNET noted that the Toshiba Gigabeat S was also more scratch resistant.  The Gigabeat S also has a 2.4 inch QVGA colour screen, an FM tuner (with 30 programmable stations), and a “tactile and delicate” navigation system via the crosshair.

The only real scruple that CNET found was that in order to transfer music to the Gigabeat S, the user had to have Windows XP software on their computer. Besides that, Microsoft will probably be able to counter Apple’s Itunes with their own Windows Media Player 11, MTV’s Urge Music Service, and Vongo’s movie subscription service.  Toshiba’s Gigabeat S retails for a low price of only $280.
